Marjane sent to Europe

Marjane’s parents sent to her Europe to protect her. It wasn’t safe for her to stay in Iran while the war was taking place. People she knew were dying and her parents probably thought it was best that she left. That’s not a situation you want a child growing up in and I think her parents understood this so they decided to give her a chance at a more normal life outside of the war. Her parents were probably somewhat worried she would become emotionally unstable from the constant stress.
I think they made the correct choice sending her to Europe. While it’s definitely not recommended to send your child off to another country, I don’t believe they had much of a choice. They could’ve kept her in Iran where she was at risk of being bombed almost everyday or she could go to Europe without her parents and be safer. It’s also important to note that Marjane wasn’t just randomly shipped off without anywhere to go. She was to stay with Zozo (even though that didn’t go exactly as planned).

The one thing I don’t exactly understand is why her parents couldn’t go with her. It seems like moving out of the country as a family until the war was over would’ve been a much better plan. That way Marjane’s parents could look after her and they weren’t at risk of being bombed.

Marjane's Heroes

I was interested in the way that young Marjane regarded her heroes. Without considering the morals of what they did, it seemed that Marjane would view anyone as a hero as long as they had fought in the war or gone to prison. She most likely adopted this mindset after hearing the stories from other kids about their family members fighting in the war.  This caused her to disregard her parents as she was disappointed they hadn’t ever done anything she considered heroic. Her uncle, on the other hand, had experienced war and prison which Marjane admired. Some of Marjane’s friends had family members that died in prison. While talking to one girl, Marjane claims that the girl should be happy her father died a hero. The girl responds with “I wish he were alive and in jail rather than dead and a hero”. I believe this response caused Marjane to think but she didn’t fully understand or relate until Anoosh was killed.

Marjane's Grandmother

             What led to Marjane's grandmother yelling at her? It started with Reza complaining to Marjane that she wasn't made up enough, so she decided to surprise him one day by putting on lots of makeup. As she waited for him, a car full of Guardians of the Revolution approached followed by a bus which signified a raid. She called them over and claimed a man called her something "indecent". This distracted them so she could get away. This is the story she later told her grandmother that caused her to become angered (Pages 185-186)               I believe her yelling was justified. Not only had Marjane gotten an innocent man arrested but she was also laughing and joking about it.  At one point the man even begged her to tell them the truth but instead she called him a lier which probably got him in more trouble.
